2016 F-Class US National Report

[ Report by Mike Jones ]

The Santa Margarita Gun Club’s F-Class team traveled last month to compete in the F-Class Long Range National Championship in Lodi Wisconsin. Team members

Walter Lange, Mark Roth and Team Captain Duane Fitzgerald competed in both individual and team competition at Midrange Palma ( 300, 500, 600) and Long Range(1000yd) matches over 8 days of competition.

Our team represented Santa Margarita well, taking a 3rd in one long range match and finished tied for 4th place overall and Bronze Medal in Team Match 9 against some of the best teams in the world.

Both Walter Lange and Mark Roth won individual medals as well:

  • Walter Lange – 3 individual medals: Bronze 600 yard Match 10, Bronze Mid-Range Aggregate, Silver 1000 yard Match 6.
  • Mark Roth two individual medals: Silver in one daily aggregate and Bronze in a match.

Conditions at Lodi were much different from what we shoot in – Rain on several days, little or no mirage to help read the wind by, and a tree lined range to help confuse the wind – and the shooters! At several points the rain and fog made the target all but invisible and shooters had to center the cross hairs on the round meatball of the black portion of the target, as no value lines were visible.

Electronic scoring systems by Silver Mountain were used and after a few bugs were worked out, for the most part, everybody was happy with them. This seems to be the inevitable wave of the future, primarily because it eliminates the need to pull targets. Shot values appeared instantly on the tablets given to the shooters and scorers followed by the shot location on the target replicated on the tablets 7 seconds later. 7 seconds was used to simulate the time a good target puller would service the target. We met with Silver Mountain and got a thorough run through of the product. They cost $ 3000.00 each – plus $ 3500 for the server.

2016 October 08 – 09 Long Range Report

[Report from Mike Jones]

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend. We had outstanding participation with 24 shooters on Saturday and 31!!! on Sunday. We have to acknowledge Rich Elliott, Van Texas and John Hermsen as the Medics and RSO. Please thank each of them (when you have the opportunity) as we cannot shoot if we don’t have medics and RSOs with us.

I want to personally thank Gunnery Sergeant Dylan Rokos. He has been our primary advocate and conduit to get the invitations out to the Marines on base to come join us. Dylan is transferring to Okinawa so will no longer be joining us. Hopefully after his tour in Okinawa we will see him back on base and at the ranges with us.

Saturday was the usual challenging conditions with wind starting early and being very shifty in the morning and then it just turned into a blow in the afternoon. I had 4 MOA on my 284 and was still holding right 9 or 8 ring in the final stage on Saturday. Jerry McDonough was the high for the day with a 578-15.

Sunday was epic conditions with essentially no wind in the morning. Marc Mittry shot a 198 in his first string with a loose front sight! We had this low wind condition until about 11 am, and then the wind machine started again. High score for the day was Lee Davis with a 567-13. We also had 4 Marines join us for the 1000 yards on Sunday. The Marines were very thankful for the opportunity to shoot with us and do something they normally have very little experience with. I hope they will all join us for another match or at Mid-Range.

Match Winners were:

  • Jerry McDonough for the sling shooters.
  • Mike Jones for the F-Open.
  • Lee Davis for FTR.

Scores available on the Match Results page.

Thanks to Duane Fitzgerald for preparing the food and giving up his last string of fire so everything was ready when the range was cleaned up. I hope everyone enjoyed the refreshments after the hot dry day, I know I did.

Congratulations to Walter Lange, Mark Roth and Duane Fitzgerald for their results in Lodi at F-Class Nationals. Walter and Mark won individual medals and the group finished 4th in the nation in the Team Match!

Looking forward…. We are looking at schedules for the ranges with the Gunners to set our competition schedule for the next year. I am waiting to see what the new Gunner at 29 Palms is planning for December, before scheduling our next match. We will be inviting some of the Wounded Warrior to join us at our next 1000 yard match so stay tuned for that date, and we will continue to have enlisted Marines join us at the range.

2016 Camp Pendleton Open Recap and Results

Congratulations to Camp Pendleton Open winner Justin Skaret! The winning score was 1465-56X, this is his third victory in this tournament. Justin also won the NM Course match fired on Saturday with 488-18. This is particularly impressive considering the difficult wind conditions, my relay had on 7 minutes of wind at 300!!!

We were able to award two EIC legs in Saturdays leg match. The silver, and 8 points went to Jeff Mikesell with a score of 475-17X. This completes Mike’s journey to Distinguished Rifleman, congratulations Mike! The bronze and 6 points went to Steve Collins with a score of 468-4X.

The Sunday 1000 point was won by Bob Gill, his score was 979-38X.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the match. Special thanks for all those who traveled long distances to attend. We had a strong Arizona contingent this year. Jake Stadler came all the way from Texas to attend the match and he went home with the Expert Class medal as a well earned reward. It is noteworthy that he did this with a borrowed rifle and no zeros!

I also wanted to say thanks to Harry for running the match so well and also for all the fine trophies he worked so hard to get for the match. I don’t know of any other match in California that offers beautiful trophies like these for all the stage and aggregate winners.

Full match results are on the Match Results page.
