June 2017 SMGC Work Party

The Santa Margarita Gun Club puts on a great venue for shooters from all over Southern California and beyond to enjoy. Of course after each shot sent down range we all expect to see a spotter, scoring disc, and tape over the last well placed shot. This wouldn’t happen without members pitching in to refurbish and replenish the supplies and targets we all shoot on. Today was such a day where members volunteered to give up a Saturday morning for the benefit of all participants. It was a “Making Lemonade Day” as Mike Jones put it. Our match this weekend was canceled due to fire break maintenance going on in the impact zone area. With all the new growth we’ve seen on base this year I’m sure it’s a seriously big job to keep Camp Pendleton safe from wildfire. Thanks to all the guys who were out there today doing just that!

Today’s service entailed cleaning up the club CONEX boxes on R116A, stocking and cleaning the pit service cans, correcting overgrowth, and rebuilding the targets we use on Range 117A. None of this would have happened without much of the same organization and controls you’d see on a day the club was hosting a live fire event. Mike Jones had to schedule and get approved our time on the range. We had to have a medic on hand and Van Texas was gracious to provide his presence to cover this duty. A big thanks to Van for coming out and being prepared to help any of us if required! Thanks to Dave Ellis and Mike Jones for providing the tools and directing the activities to get the most of our time on the range.

Today’s work party crew consisted of:
Mike Jones – OIC
John Hermsen
Marc Mittry
Gary Atkinson – RSO
Bill Baston
Dave Ellis
John Kountz
Dan Shapiro – Honorary LR for a day GSM guy
Van Texas – Medic
Simon Wagner – RSO

We got started promptly at 09:00hrs per Mikes’ directive. I managed to waltz in fashionably late at 09:15 and escaped photographic evidence of the transgression by the skin of my teeth. We left Dan Shapiro and John Hermsen at the CONEX boxes to work on the pit service cans and clear out old material that no longer served the club. Dave Ellis struck out with resolve to tame the tenacious outgrowth of mustard plants with his landscaping gear and the remainder of us went to the the pits at 116A to begin work on the targetry

One of the highlights of the morning – We all got a chance to check out Gary’s new (to him) F250. This rig was a ‘barn find’ of Gary’s – a real time machine! It’s going to serve him well no doubt about it.

In rebuilding the targets, job one is to shuck the faces and then extricate the staples. Here Bill and Mike dig at the barnacle like staples while Gary mixes up the glue

Here Mike Jones is giving Gary a lesson on the staple gun manual of arms. I can tell you that Gary’s eyes were glazed over right about now. The moment he heard ‘trigger’ he was done listening.

Gary completes a round of stapling until his gun is ‘all out’. John Hermsen is scoring, Marc Mittry is coaching. Mike Jones is at the ready with a reload.

Here we are preparing the cardboard to take the target. Did I mention the targets are divided in quadrants?

Clearly this takes some solid communication skills and a dose of luck. The four pieces of the target interleave and won’t tolerate a shift in order or misalignment.

A good foundation is where it starts. The first corner is critical, and when done right  you can count on the rest of the job going well.

Careful alignment of the quadrants ensures a round and smoothly matched X ring. Marc Mittry was supervising to make sure the ring wasn’t any bigger than permitted. Apparently us F-Class Pukes can’t be trusted!

As the targets were completed they were laid out in the lot to allow them some time to dry

True to his word, Mike Jones oversees the final load out right at noon as promised.

Thanks again to all who came out to help! I’m sure we’ll enjoy the fruit of our labor on the 25th/26th LR match.

Saturday afternoon was host to a team match after the three individual matches had been completed. The late afternoon match was tricky with the wind in full effect. This put the match outcome equally on the shoulders of both the shooter and the coach. Thanks to all who stayed to compete after a long day in the sun. It was a good race with only 15 points separating the top three teams. In the end our Match Rifle team from Arizona took the Medal – well done guys!

We deployed the clubs new shelters for the first time and struggled with some environmental challenges on the first day. We had one of three standing on Saturday afternoon

The lucky shaded few!

F-Class shooters are welcome to shoot in any Mid-Range match and have an opportunity to compete against other F-Class competitors for awards over the two day event

The turn out for F-Class at the regional was solid with 18 shooters across the two disciplines of F T/R and F-Open

The Team match at the end of the day put both shooters and coaches to the test. We had five teams competing of which three were composed of F-class shooters. As seen above, the Desert Sharpshooters Match Rifle team dominated beating the second place team by 11 points.

At the conclusion of the Saturday shooting events the Club put the talented Duane Fitzgerald in charge of a delicious championship meal. Duane cooks likes he shoots, exceptionally!

We had ribs, beans, and slaw that were top notch

On our way home we saw that a fire was in progress at the Northern end of the base. This continued into the next day with heavy radio traffic on the base radio dedicated to managing it.

On Sunday morning we took valuable lessons learned the day before to construct the line shelter with some reinforcement

Canting the shelters forward allowed us to maintain shade on the line throughout the day

Dave Ellis came to the rescue with a fish tape to fix a ‘wounded’ cover from the previous days mayhem. Talk about being prepared!

Gary and his neighbor Joe deep in strategic discussion. Joe is not a firing participant in the match, but comes to help Gary and anyone else he can. Joe goes out of his way to haul gear or set up the range. His above and beyond participation in the club is very much appreciated!

Wounded Warrior Training Camp

Wounded Warrior Training Camp – Special Delivery!

In case you didn’t know Harry is dedicating a solid week of support and coaching at the Wounded Warrior Training Camp on MCB Camp Pendleton. This is the training camp for the Marines leading up to the DOD Wounded Warrior Games in Chicago during July.

The Shooting Coaches are (Left to Right) John Flores (GySgt, USMC Ret), Harry Harrison (MGySgt, USMCR Ret), Phil Bryant (SSgt, USMC Ret), and Mike Rios (GySgt, USMC Ret).

My wife and some of her friends made batches of cookies for all the competitors, we will see how well they get shared. Thank you to Anne Galvan, Mary Brown and Tiffany Jones.

As a reward, Tiffany got a little training from Harry here is her first group with the Olympic Air Pistol!

For those of you who haven’t seen this shooting, the rifle target is shown below the 10 ring is a dot! All shooting is from 10 meters, and yes it is hard.

May 06-07, 2017 Long Range Match Report

We had to change up our plans due to the predicted storm over the weekend. Originally we planned to shoot 1000 yards on Saturday and 600 yard Sunday so everyone could get some practice before the Mid-Range Regional on May 20 and 21. With the near 100% chance of rain Saturday night I decided to run the 600 yard match on Saturday while we could get down the range and then do the 1000 yard match on Sunday if the rain held off. We had 12 brave souls show up to shoot on Saturday as well as Van Texas a our medic. Thanks to Van, Marc and Gary for their efforts as Medics and RSOs for Saturday. Also a big thank you to Marine Cpl Kenneth Ring and Juan Enriquez for their duties as pit pullers. You guys were a big help and great pit service!

Since Simon wasn’t present and I was running the match, we did not get any pictures. Unlike Simon’s previous lush green images and fording the lake/swamp near the pits from April 9, the range is drying out and other than a single large Mustard plant in Mark Roth’s target line the rest of the range was pretty well brown and recently mowed.

We had on and off drizzle which made a slight mess, but no soaking during our 60 shots for record. Lee Davis won the match in FTR shooting his 223 with a 594-34X. Fantastic shooting Master Chief! Marc Mittry was second overall with a 593-26X. Rounding out F-Class, Gary Atkinson was second with a 592-30X, Mike Jones finished 3rd with a 592-22X.

At the end of the shoot, a quick check of the forecast and I decided to cancel the match for Sunday. Fortunately, I woke up to wet streets and rain in San Clemente this morning (Sunday) and feel vindicated. I would have hated to give up the day if there was no rain.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and helping with the range setup and breakdown. Scores for the day are shown below.

  • Gary Atkinson FTR 592-30X
  • William Baston FTR 573-14X
  • Lee Davis FTR 594-34X
  • Mike Jones F-OPEN 592-22X
  • Marc Mittry Match 593-26X
  • Randy Nations FTR 525-4X
  • Mark Roth F-OPEN 589-18X
  • Kerry Stottlemyer FTR 545-6X
  • Eugene York FTR 570-13X
